The below poem was written by the Poet Lord Byron, upon the death of his beloved dog Botswain.
When some proud son of man returns to earth,
Unknown to glory, but upheld by birth,
The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And storied urns record who rests below;
When all is done, upon the tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, the foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his master's own,
Who labors, lives, fights, breathes for him alone,
Unhonored falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the soul he held on earth.
While man, vain insect, hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole, exclusive heaven.
Ye! Who behold, perchance, this simple urn,
Pass on; it honours none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend's remains these stones rise,
I have never known but one - and here he lies.

This is Max, our first service dog. He lived with us for 3 years, but retired from active duty early due to injury. He went to live with a retired dog handler in Tenerife, who had opened a bar on the beach. Max had many wonderful years sitting on the beach being fussed by all the customers. There are many people who went back to the island again and again just to say hello to him, and there were probably more photographs taken of him than beach and sea ones! ![]()
This is Tynsil the Lion King at Katelands J.W, or Milo. He was our first German Wirehaired Pointer. Bred by Barbara Stamp, he was an amazing dog with whom we had much success in the show ring, and who introduced us to the working side of owning a gundog. He was the 3 day overall winner of the Bannerdown Stakes Class Paignton Championship Show 2002. ![]() |
